Meeting with Current Students - After

(Arun & Shiva (2007 IT), Arun Kumar & Kaushik (2006 CSE), Meera & Pallavi (2007 CSE) met the current batch of 3rd and 4th year students in the college today.)

After much confusion, skepticism about whether such a meeting was required or not and the customary "mike not working" problem, we finally met the students today. At the outset, it must be said that though the agenda about *what* was to be spoken was set and also "who speaks what" was agreed upon (to some extent), it didn't quite come out that way - with the end result being that most of us kept repeating what the others had said. In the end, like a regular decently-made-Tamil-masala movie, our interaction with the students ended on a reasonably high note.

What we spoke -

  • Basic Information about next week's event.
  • Alumni Club Inauguration.
  • Purposes of Alumni Club.
  • How Networking helps - be it for academic, professional or social causes.
  • Feedback from students about their expectations.
  • Getting hold of some volunteers to help organize on Feb 12th.
With the usual clapping by students, we did manage to convey what we wanted to. But when it came to feedback, as is well-established in MSEC, not a single student ventured to offer any, when we asked from the stage on the mike. But once our speech was over and we asked the students to disperse, there was such a massive surge of students who came for "offline" discussions/suggestions that we had to get back to the mike again and request for some order!

A gist of students' expectations (which is more or less in sync with what the Alumni Club hopes to carry out)-
  • Info about higher education - the different exams, opportunities after, etc.
  • Core companies for EEE/ECE.
  • Experiences at work (Ha!).
  • Guest Lectures (Of course ;-).
  • Coding problems for CSE/ECE/EEE [:D + :( + Hmmm].
  • Projects for Final Year (Well, of course!).
  • Workshops.
  • In-plant Training (We heard hardly any students go for in-plant training these days. During our times, even if we had to fake them, it was at least mandatory :|).
  • Paper Presentation (If what we heard is accurate, the students have very little idea about this and hardly anyone is even allowed to attend competitions conducted in other colleges).
  • Communication Skills Training.
We also managed to get the contact details of a few volunteers to help us organize the event next Saturday.

Meeting with Current Students

We are planning to meet the current 3rd and 4th years on Saturday (Feb 5). A few reasons to meet them -

1. College juniors, at least those who are in their 3-4th years, need to know at least that such an event (the Alumni Club inauguration) is going to happen. It wont be nice if they come to know of it through the newspapers or on the day of the event or something. In a very small way, keeping them informed, to be simple.
2. Warm them up to the idea of an alumni club. Remember that once the club's up and running, those are the guys who are most likely to benefit first up - more like target audience/recipients for whatever help we are likely to do. This would be a good introduction for them.
3. Get some feedback from them abt what they want from the club. No point in us assuming what they want, and there's also a good chance they might have some valid requirements which we can give, but dont know about, as of now.
4. Get some volunteers to interact with the club members so we can have info on their placements, needs etc.
5. Get some volunteers to help put together the event on Feb 12.

These are just some of the things we have in mind for interacting with them. Feel free to give your suggestions, as always.
Also, the plan is to finish the meeting within maximum half an hour. Trying to finish this sometime on Sat morn - say 9'ish. Anyone who wants to come/talk, please let us know.

College Growth - Jithu Speaks

As Kamal Hassan says “ I was brought up in Sivaji Ganesan’s lap .. so It is no surprise if I act well .. It would be a surprise If I *don’t* act well “. Same way after being with Kaushik , Mani , Sudharshun   etc.. for more than 4 years , It is no surprise if I write and  It would be a surprise If I dont write some thing .. So let me start !
College growth is the function of four parameters / people
1)      College head / principal / dean / board members
2)      Current Students
3)      Professors / Lecturers
4)      Alumni
All four together should help in the growth of the college and if even one lacks, it will reduce the intensity of the institution’s success. Of course, success is subjective and according to me success of a college is to reach the top position with respect to education , facilities , students , lecturers , placement , research etc ...
College Head and Students Interaction
Though I like numbers, in this case, the human factor plays a pivotal role. As we know, when we meet many people it is very difficult to remember all. For example, the Principal can remember more than 80 % of first batch , 75 % of second batch , 70 % of third batch etc.. and of course it is applicable to all lecturers .. It leads to lesser interaction between the students and the head of the college after a few years. So students slowly begin to think they are tangential to the college and their job is to study, get a job or further studies - that’s all! We cannot insist that the princi remember and show affection to all students! So we need to make students realize the importance of the head of the college in order to inject the MSEC Patriotism! Secondly, students should be proud of the college.
College Head and Lecturers / Professors
Here we cannot do anything. The Principal is already helping the lecturers in their higher education, so it would not be a problem and it is not in our scope.
Current Student and Alumni
It should be bi-directional. Leave about first half-a-dozen batch passed outs. Our home is MSEC. In future when some alumni wants to provide help for the college what would be the incentive for those people? Think about this. Create a framework such a way that when an alumnus helps college growth and current students, his help should help him either directly or indirectly. For example, if an alumnus starts a new company, the current students should be in the position to help him by testing beta version, giving ideas etc. - this would bind the student-alumni relationship.
Professors / Lecturers and Alumni
Involve some lecturers in our alumni group so that we can update what is going on in the outside world/industry/Master (MS/M.Tech/M.E) Institutions so they can at least realize the importance of fundae and education. For example I was asked in interview “What is significance of Eigen value and Vector , Whats the difference among Fourier , Laplace and Z - transforms ”. We need to update lecturers that applied mathematics is important. This would help circuit branch lecturers learn themselves and help students in applying mathematics in their subjects.
Current students and Professors / Lecturers
If the previous category becomes successful this one will definitely be successful because lecturers will start thinking about papers, challenging projects, pragmatic assignments etc. So good students will be glued to them.
College Head and Alumni
This will not be problem. Still Its our duty to insist principal on some gray areas such as appointing PhD professors at least one per department, Pretty good labs etc. Since she likes taking suggestions we can convey this.
I think relationships among 4 parameter (4c2 combination = 6 is over)
I conclude that the growth of the college depends on the relationship among these 4 groups of people. I request we should concentrate on this bit more.
Thanks
Jithu
