College Growth - Jithu Speaks

As Kamal Hassan says “ I was brought up in Sivaji Ganesan’s lap .. so It is no surprise if I act well .. It would be a surprise If I *don’t* act well “. Same way after being with Kaushik , Mani , Sudharshun   etc.. for more than 4 years , It is no surprise if I write and  It would be a surprise If I dont write some thing .. So let me start !
College growth is the function of four parameters / people
1)      College head / principal / dean / board members
2)      Current Students
3)      Professors / Lecturers
4)      Alumni
All four together should help in the growth of the college and if even one lacks, it will reduce the intensity of the institution’s success. Of course, success is subjective and according to me success of a college is to reach the top position with respect to education , facilities , students , lecturers , placement , research etc ...
College Head and Students Interaction
Though I like numbers, in this case, the human factor plays a pivotal role. As we know, when we meet many people it is very difficult to remember all. For example, the Principal can remember more than 80 % of first batch , 75 % of second batch , 70 % of third batch etc.. and of course it is applicable to all lecturers .. It leads to lesser interaction between the students and the head of the college after a few years. So students slowly begin to think they are tangential to the college and their job is to study, get a job or further studies - that’s all! We cannot insist that the princi remember and show affection to all students! So we need to make students realize the importance of the head of the college in order to inject the MSEC Patriotism! Secondly, students should be proud of the college.
College Head and Lecturers / Professors
Here we cannot do anything. The Principal is already helping the lecturers in their higher education, so it would not be a problem and it is not in our scope.
Current Student and Alumni
It should be bi-directional. Leave about first half-a-dozen batch passed outs. Our home is MSEC. In future when some alumni wants to provide help for the college what would be the incentive for those people? Think about this. Create a framework such a way that when an alumnus helps college growth and current students, his help should help him either directly or indirectly. For example, if an alumnus starts a new company, the current students should be in the position to help him by testing beta version, giving ideas etc. - this would bind the student-alumni relationship.
Professors / Lecturers and Alumni
Involve some lecturers in our alumni group so that we can update what is going on in the outside world/industry/Master (MS/M.Tech/M.E) Institutions so they can at least realize the importance of fundae and education. For example I was asked in interview “What is significance of Eigen value and Vector , Whats the difference among Fourier , Laplace and Z - transforms ”. We need to update lecturers that applied mathematics is important. This would help circuit branch lecturers learn themselves and help students in applying mathematics in their subjects.
Current students and Professors / Lecturers
If the previous category becomes successful this one will definitely be successful because lecturers will start thinking about papers, challenging projects, pragmatic assignments etc. So good students will be glued to them.
College Head and Alumni
This will not be problem. Still Its our duty to insist principal on some gray areas such as appointing PhD professors at least one per department, Pretty good labs etc. Since she likes taking suggestions we can convey this.
I think relationships among 4 parameter (4c2 combination = 6 is over)
I conclude that the growth of the college depends on the relationship among these 4 groups of people. I request we should concentrate on this bit more.
Thanks
Jithu

Skype Conference

Guys and Gals of MSEC alumni we will be having our first Skype conference tonight at around 8:45 PM.

Using Skype is easy. All you need is a skype account, a headset and a microphone..... Since this is the first meeting we would discuss about the preparations and pending items for the Alumni Meet on February 12th. Skype conference is mainly for people who like to participate actively in the discussions related to Alumni association and Alumni Meet and who cannot come to college for the meetings. This will also enable our friends staying outside Chennai (US, Other states in India) to participate in the discussions.

For more details on how to join the conference please read these points....

Instructions:
1) Go to Skype and create an account. If you already have a skype account log in using that.
2) If you don't have installed in your system please download it here - http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows/
(Choose a different link if you are using Mac). Please note you need to be signed in to download skype.

Manisha Mohan's post about life in MSEC!

Received a mail from Manisha Mohan today morning about her experiences with MSEC. Publishing it on behalf of her - Shiva

College days – Those blissful days!!!

College days are indeed the most memorable and wonderful days in anyone’s life. I still
remember the day, when I stepped into through the doors of KRS auditorium on the very
first day of college in August 2004. The transformation in me when I had stepped out of
the same auditorium after the convocation ceremony in Jan 2009 can never be expressed.
Yes! It is indeed my college which is responsible for what I am today. For all the respect
I gain from the society, as a responsible engineer, a good care taker and as a situation
handler, I have no words to express all the gratitude towards my college.

The real challenge started when I took over as the class representative in early 2005.
From there I continued to take over as the joint secretary and finally the Secretary of
Electronics and Communication Students Association (ELECSA). A post that I can
always boast about!!! Time and tide gave me no bounds. As we conducted symposiums,
I learnt the art of people management, time and task management, most important
of all, ‘Responsibility’. Taking an active part in the placement cell helped me to
communicate as a proud MSECian to various concerns and IT giants.

The vital story of all is about the final year campus placement. My college had always
created history in placing 100% of its students. With all the grooming I received, I was
placed at India’s largest MNC, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). I continued to spread
the MSEC magic in TCS as well. But now, I stand as a M.E. student, in one of India’s
most prestigious institutions, Anna University, as a student elected class representative
again – a trusted and respected girl in my college.

As I walk through the memories of my college life, my eyes filled with tears, thinking
about all the fun, from project reviews to campus interviews, nick names to last benches,
friendship, symposiums, all the chatting and laughing, till the painful moment of
separation!!! When it is time to depart, I am sure that everyone from my college would
leave with a heavy heart.

Today, life is full of commitment and questions about future. But the cherished moments
of my college life will always stay afresh in my memories.
Words can never express my gratitude towards my most respected Principal, revered
Correspondent, my loving and honored HOD, my placement officer, all the staffs who
have and not taught me, to our ever famous Raman sir and Chemistry ma’m - Noone can
ever replace how much you mean to us!!!

SHS Mani's post!!

Received a mail from SHS Mani (Class of ECE2006) and i am posting this in the blog for everyone. Hope he doesn't mind :)
- Shiva
<Begin>

This is the beginning and we should all be so proud that we are given the power of sowing the seeds to success. We have all heard of the quote “With great power comes great responsibility”, now is the moment for all of us to shoulder that responsibility. It is essential that we nurture this small sapling called the MSEC alumni group well so that it grows to be a banyan tree which can anchor the group for decades and even centuries to come. It is essential that we do it right the First Time.

Generally the 10th year, the 25th year and other factors of 5 are mostly celebrated with grandeur; it is the years in-between which needs special attention. To ensure our fellow MSECians and upcoming MSECians are to bear the fruit of the labour, we need to have an iron clad objective and ensure that the MSEC alumni group works in tandem with the college not just in placements but right from the induction of the freshmen. This msec alumni blog is already turning out to be a nice breeding ground for wonderful ideas and it is time we start transforming them into actions and make the difference.

Following are few administrative aspects that come to my mind. They don’t bear any significance to the goals by themselves but are essential for the sustainability and the functioning of the alumni group not today, not tomorrow for but for generations to come.

1) Establish process and procedures to go about with the identification and functioning of the group. These process and procedures are not for today, but for many years down the line, there should be a reference book available to handle all scenarios.
·         Identifying the working committee for the alumni group to ensure that ideas are transformed into actions. I agree with Shiva that we should have a working group rather than hierarchical structure since the former gives more flexibility. It should be a voluntary involvement and not mandatory involvement.
·         Periodic rotation to the working group to enable people to share the activities and infuse newer ideas.
·         Identify and establish goals for the working term of that committee.
·         Ways to keep in touch with the members of the alumni and to share the good and not so pleasant news across the MSEC fraternity.
·         To have alumni chapters at various locations across the globe.
·         Interaction between Alumnus and the then current batch of student in the college.

2) More importantly, we need to inculcate the passion to run this like a corporate governed organization and not a (Indian) government run Sick units.
Few goal oriented ideas to add to the list:

  1.            Today in India the major problem is not the lack of graduates but the lack of unemployable graduates. We can give our MSECians the edge by making them industry ready. There are already handful suggestions on the subject, we just need to chalk out a plan and put them to use.
  2.            I have come across a number of Freshers (even senior executives) unable to differentiate between a technology and a domain. We need to help students differentiate between a technology and a domain and educate them on their roles in today’s businesses across the globe. A Subject Matter Expert(SME) is as important as a Java or a .NET developer if not more. Some might have inclination towards a specific subject, however they do not get to appreciate its importance until a few years in the industry after which they then transform into a Domain expert. Such insights can give them the much needed head start to their career.
  3.           In today’s world of Google, information is available at the click of the mouse, however still majority of the people are ignorant of the happenings in technology. We need to get them accustomed to the RSS feeds and the Google Readers. That way we would have already sowed the seed of entrepreneurship (here is the spelling :P) in the minds of technology innovators.
  4.          I have always looked forward to E cube week with great enthusiasm, it was a great concept, a great idea… but then there is a lot of scope for improvement. The students are not to completely blame, because they do not have the guidance or the visibility on what is in store for them a couple of years down the line. Ecube is a great idea, we need to transform it into a success story.
  5.         A number of our fellow alumnus have gone ahead to pursue their Masters Degree from various world class institutes from across the globe. Not only would their guidance be useful for students looking to do their masters, but also if they can guide on how to go about with research studies, it will open up a world of opportunities for our upcoming MSEC students. This is especially useful to non IT streams where scope and opportunity is minimal in our country.

Finally, I would like to touch upon an important aspect of the alumni group. I have been talking to a number of our fellow alumnus and the general perception is that the feedback we have got back from the alumnus is not overwhelming. I did some research on the subject. On an average, in an alumni group the active members are in the late 40s and above (there are always exceptions). The reason for the same is, that is when their kids have become grown ups and they get time to unwind and take a look back at their alma mater from where they began their humble journey called life. Ours is only 10 years old and I can safely say that none of us have reached that stage and we are not going to at least for another couple of decades :P I guess we are still running around, hopping flights, jumping ships to carve ourselves a successful career.

Looking at all that I guess the response we have got so far from the alumnus is good. We have to continue to work together to see the alumni group through the initial testing years and send out a positive vibe so that more and more of our alumnus feel encouraged and inspired to come join us in taking on the baton of MSEC Alumni group and MSEC in its path towards reaching greater and greater heights.

Together we can!!!
- Shs Mani.

A Few Ideas..

Hey ....

A few thoughts.. Should we use the Occasion to launch a Few initiatives...

1. Its Ten years and I dont think our College has a Entrepreuenership(chuck the spelling) Cell or a Idea Incubator..Alumni can chip in with Industry trends(what we can get off techcrunch :-))..Startup ideas can be groomed...

2. Start a Linux Club...Circuit branches should get a Linux club running..10 Students over a week can download and almost have every single distro available...and ...We should use occasion to announce launch of our own Distro...http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/..let students and alumni cooperate to have a ubuntu flavor out by EOY. Easy to do, big mileage...

3. Add jforum to the alumni site..forum to discuss project ideas for 3rd 4th year with alumni...Alumni can have a Project idea disrupt session as a regular activity...lets face it...eventually we are gonna get bored with ritchie street project ideas/govt canteens et all...advise on GRE/CAT prep..the possibilities are endless..investment insignificant...

4. For starters..ensure all E3 and Project stuff, implant trainings go into the site...it will be incredible selling point to placements...
eventually get d2d class material into the site..Alumni should supply a regular visitor group for such events...

5. Ensure Alumni is part of Placement and Symposium Steering commitee and advisory board..(for both funding/sponsorship as well as contacts) and direction and industry trending...

6. No offense..we will never be able to muster the same amount of funding that colleges on OMR can or have alumni meets at Green park or residency towers...what we lack there we must make up with elan and productiveness of the association..if its not worthwhile for ppl to spend time..the time spent is not going to come back..

Your thoughts are welcome...

Minutes of Meeting - 8th Jan, 2011

A Very Happy New Year to all of you!
Our meeting on 8th Jan was the 3rd meeting in preparation for the Alumni Meet and the first one for the new year. Rather encouragingly, we've finally got a move-on and arrived at a few more concrete plans.
  • Invitation: Decided to give the college a soft-copy of the invitation by Wednesday after consolidating the Contact List. Quite sadly, quite a few batches have still not been able to collect substantial information on this front. Irrespective of the updated contacts, we thought it would be best to print 1650 copies (an approximate number of the total number of MSEC alumni so far) and send it to either the updated address obtained from the respective SPOC's or through the college register.
  • Events: We added a couple of additional events in the itinerary for the day.
    4:00 - 5:00 PM - High Tea and Informal Chit-Chat
5:00 - 5:45 PM - Speech from the management + Alumni Site Launch + Speech about Alumni Association.
    5:45 - 6:00 PM - Speech/Presentation by Rajesh Kumar, Pawan Kumar - ECE '05
    6:00 - 6:15 PM - Speech/Presentation by Shiva (IT), Meera (CSE), et al - '07
    6:15 - 6:30 PM - Speech by EEE '08 guys
    6:30 - 6:45 PM - Surprise Event
    6:45 - 7:00 PM - Fun & Games
7: 00 - 7:15 PM - The Floor's all yours! (Open session for anyone to come and speak.)
    7:15 - 7:30 PM - Speech by Raman Sir
    7:30 PM onwards - Dinner
  • Meeting with Current 3rd/4th Years: We were earlier planning to meet with the current 3rd/4th years some time this week, but owing to the symposiums, we thought it would be better to meet with them later on. We kind of agreed that meeting them exactly a week before the symposium would be a good idea so we could also get their help in organizing the event on Feb 12th.
Format of interaction: Instead of having 1 or 2 persons give a rambling talk on the Alumni Club & its objectives standing on the dais, we thought of adopting a slightly more colloquial approach - having around 3-4 of us spread across the hall and presenting the idea of the Alumni Club in a conversational manner. If any of you are interested in talking to them, as always, just shoot an email to msecalumni@gmail.com
  • E-Meets: Quite a few people who are not in Chennai or were not able to come to college for whatever reason suggested meeting on Skype so they could also participate, which is obviously a good idea. Hence, we've planned to meet on Wednesday, 12th Jan at 10 PM on Skype. Please email msecalumni@gmail.com if you would also like to participate.
That's about stuff from us for now. So long and until Wednesday, bye bye!

Shiva's post on MSEC Alumni meet and Alumni Association

This post was something that i have wanted to write for a long long time.... at last here it is. This contains various queries that i get everyday from our college mates and some general questions in FAQ form. So lets get on with the FAQ's about alumni meet.

Q) Do we need to pay any money towards Alumni meet/association?

A) No. Nope. Nahi. illa. here is a list of No in another 520 languages :P absolutely not needed. Even i was apprehensive when i went for the first meeting but it has been categorically conveyed to the management that none of the alumnus will contribute any money towards the college or towards Lions/Leo club. You might contribute to the Alumni scholarship fund if you are interested and yeah you don't have to pay for the dinner for the Feb 12th alumni meet (Seriously one guy asked me this and he also said that he will not come for the meet if they ask money for dinner :D ). Our caution deposit of Rs.5000 was taken towards the Alumni fund and the college will take care of all these expenses.

Q) I heard that some of you are meeting in college regarding the Alumni meet/association. I did not get invite from anyone so i didn't attend any of the meetings.

 A) I am very sorry. We have been trying to reach out to everyone. But it is really difficult to contact  everyone who has passed out of MSEC. We have been regularly posting the meeting dates in this blog and in the Facebook group. We are in the process of collecting the latest email address from each class SPOC and so you will be intimated about each and every meet soon.

Q) How many meets have been held so far?

A) Two

Q) Who all attended the meets?

A) First meeting on 4th December 2010 - Totally 12 attended this meeting - Vijay Venkatesh (ECE2007), Kaushik (CSE2006), Rajesh kumar (ECE2005), Aadit Vaidyanathan (EEE2007), VijayElumalai (CSE2006), Praveen KJVS (ECE2006),Ananth (IT2007), Raghavendran (IT2007), Murali Krishna (CSE2007),Vinoth (ECE2007), Bharath (2009), Venkataraman(CSE2007)

Second meeting on 18th December 2010 - Totally 12 attended this meeting - Vijay Venkatesh (ECE2007), Kaushik (CSE2006) Rajesh kumar(ECE2005), VijayElumalai(CSE2006), Naresh (IT2007), Kesavan (IT 2007), Ajay Bharathi (ECE2007),Anand Babu (EEE2007), Srilatha (IT2007), Pallavi (CSE2007), Rama Rajendran (CSE2007), Raja Shekar (EEE2008), Meera Sundar (CSE 2007)

Q) Who are all the SPOCS for the various batches?

A) Check out this table for more answers:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0Ajf4cnqzxVs5dEFVcDRSN1lhUURUTXpNZWV1MVVQLUE&hl=en&single=true&gid=0&output=html

Q) What do the SPOCS do?

A) They will act as an interface. SPOCS will convey the important decisions that were made during the meets and will also gather information which is required for the successful organization of the event.

Example: We are planning to make a video for the alumni video based out of the photographs taken during our college time. So each SPOC will help the video team by gathering photographs from that particular class and will provide it to the video team.

Q) When is the next meet?

A) January 8th at 5pm in MSEC conference hall.

Q) The most important question of all. Why an Alumni Association in the first place?

A) Let me list down the reasons

  • Every college has it. No, seriously from Harvard to IIM to IIT, every college has an alumni association :P
  • Amazing opportunity to network with everyone who has studied in our college.
  • Chance to guide/mentor our juniors still in college.
  • Share a special bond with our alma mater.
  • A chance to help our juniors who are innovative and creative by offering help for their projects.
  • To provide career guidance for the Juniors
  • To Organize guest lectures and workshops with the Alumni
  • Provide Domain knowledge/Industry knowledge to juniors.
  • To help needy students through Alumni scholarships ( a separate bank account will be created for the Alumni Association Scholarships).
  • As a final point i want to reiterate that the association will not involve any of the administrative work of the college.
Q) So what is the structure of the Alumni Association?

A) Princi had a small chat with us and said she wanted our association to follow something like IIT, Anna univ association which has a President, Secretary and all... But my personal view is to have a board of members with no hierarchy which will lead to the smooth functioning of the association. I think its better to decide about the structure and the functioning of the association when we all meet for the Grand Alumni Meet on February 12th.

Q) So what is planned for the Alumni Day?

A) During the meets that we had the overall consensus was not to have meaningless skits and dance programs by the juniors like what we have had all these years. Its just a waste of time and most importantly the college juniors create such a chaos during dinner and so we have decided to handle not to invite juniors to participate in the alumni reunion meet.

The rough agenda goes like this:
4:00 - 5:00 PM - High Tea and Informal Chit-Chat :D
5:00 - 5:45 PM - Speech from the management + Alumni Site Launch + Speech about Alumni Association.
5:45 - 7:15 PM - Each batch will give a short presentation about their alumni.*
7:15 - 7:30 PM - Alumni Video
7:30 - 7:45 PM - Speech by Raman Sir
7:45 PM onwards - Dinner

*The individual batch presentation might be clubbed into a single presentation for 15 to 30 minutes. Apart from that if anyone else is interested to perform on that day do let us know and we can accommodate that accordingly.

Q) Why are you wasting your time on all these?

 A) Because its exciting to be a part of all these. But frankly speaking there is too much to do and its getting extremely difficult to work on it with a small team actively contributing.
Moreover there are lot of interested people who are not in Chennai and only a handful of Msecians are in Chennai who take part in the meets and work towards the alumni meet. If you are in Chennai and if you are interested please do attend the alumni meetings. It will take maximum one hour and mostly we will have only one meeting every month. As of now we are meeting very frequently to plan and work for the grand reunion in Feb.

Q) No i am not interested in anything related to MSEC or the Alumni Association. Why should i waste my precious time for these?

A) You have already wasted 6 minutes and 37 seconds by reading this blog. Please don't waste your precious time by ever visiting this site again. Thanks :)

Q) I am interested to help and be a part of the Alumni Association. What should i do?

A) Thanks a lot. Please try to come to coll for the Jan 8th meeting.

If you have any other queries please send a mail to msecalumni@gmail.com and if you want to abuse me for the above post please send a mail to shivf1@gmail.com

Adios,
Shiva (IT2007)
